Latest updates from the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE):
1 RESEARCH FINDINGS
Discovering value: Women’s participation in university and commercial AI invention
OCE published a new article, "Discovering value: Women’s participation in university and commercial AI invention," in the journal Nature Biotechnology. We used the AI patent dataset and information on the gender of inventors in PatentsView to explore women’s involvement in the AI innovation ecosystem. The article shows that women’s participation in patenting—both in AI and in other technologies—is growing, and is associated with more diverse teams and patents with higher economic value. However, more can be done to diversify the AI innovation ecosystem, especially in the university sector and within the emerging field of biotechnology AI, an area where women’s participation is associated with substantial value.

AUTM podcast on OCE’s COVID-19 Report
AUTM invited OCE to join them on their podcast, AUTM on the AIR, to discuss the report “Diagnosing COVID-19: A perspective from U.S. patenting activity.” A highlight from the podcast includes Chief Economist Andrew Toole and Senior Economist Nicholas Pairolero, two of the authors of the report, describing the outsized role played by small companies and universities in COVID-19 diagnostics, as evidenced by public U.S. patent filings through April 2023.
Listen to the podcast or read the report on OCE’s website.

The working paper studies the firms filing for trademarks related to the early metaverse and documents the impact of Facebook’s 2014 acquisition of Oculus on other firms’ metaverse activities.
