| 17. An integrated micro-optical apparatus, comprising:
a substrate having substantially planar top and bottom surfaces, an optical element being formed on one of the top and bottom
surfaces, the optical element being a lithograph; and
an active element positioned in communication with the bottom surface of the substrate and in optical communication with the
optical element, wherein the optical element relays light between the active element and an application, wherein the optical
element is a refractive element made of a material having a higher index of refraction than that of the substrate.
