| 1. An anticorrosive surface coating composition comprising
(a) a resin system, and
(b) a hydrophobic metal oxide aerogel comprising silyl moieties on the surface thereof with a surface area of at least about
350 m2/g, wherein the silyl moieties comprise at least one member selected from the group consisting of trimethyl silyl, vinyl dimethyl
silyl, acryl dimethyl silyl, and dimethyl silyl,
wherein the resin system is selected from the group consisting of alkyds, epoxies, urethanes, polyesters, cellulosics, acrylics,
and mixtures thereof; wherein the composition further comprises a carrier; and wherein the metal oxide aerogel has a median
particle diameter of about 0.2-15 μm.
