| 1. A display device which, in response to a video signal, periodically displays a portion of an image that is black, and after
the display of the portion of an image that is black, displays a portion of an image that differs from black, wherein:
a duration of displaying the portion of an image that differs from black includes at least a first period and a succeeding
period;
a duration of the first period is shorter than a duration of the succeeding period; and
a polarity of the first period differs from a polarity of the succeeding period.
