1. A system for automatically adjusting responsiveness of a rate-adaptive pacemaker by using a rate response curve mapping measured exertion levels to a sensor indicated rate, the system comprising:
means for collecting short-term maximum exertion levels and short-term maximum sensor indicated rates;
means for computing an intermediate-term average maximum exertion level being an average of the short-term maximum exertion levels and an intermediate-term average maximum sensor indicated rate being an average of the short-term maximum sensor indicated rates;
means for computing a sensor target rate as a function of the intermediate-term average maximum exertion level and a long-term maximum exertion level; and
means for periodically adjusting a slope of the rate response curve using the intermediate-term average maximum sensor indicated rate and the sensor target rate.
