1. A method of inserting a reactor cartridge into a pipe, the cartridge comprising a generally cylindrical structure which includes a plurality of spaced-apart monoliths, the method comprising: a) attaching an insertion tool to an end of the cartridge, b) lowering the cartridge, while the cartridge remains attached to the insertion tool, into the pipe, and c) detaching the insertion tool from the cartridge, wherein the insertion tool is selected to include a centering device which fits within the pipe, and at least one hook, and wherein the attaching step comprises engaging the hook with a lifting pin connected to the cartridge.
