| 1. An apparatus for use in conjunction with a subterranean well, the apparatus comprising:
an expandable element including a core, and a membrane at least partially covering the core, the core including a first material
which swells in response to contact with a hydrocarbon fluid, and the membrane including a second material which swells less
than the first material swells in response to contact with the fluid.
